Daniel Radcliffe wins first Tony Award
English actor Daniel Radcliffe won his first Tony Award, considered one of the most prestigious accolades in the theater industry.
Radcliffe won best performance by an actor in a featured role for the 2023 revival of the 1981 musical Merrily We Roll Along, according to The Hollywood Reporter (THR).
Merrily We Roll Along also won best revival and best orchestration.
In his acceptance speech, Radcliffe said it's been one of the best experiences in his life.
"It’s been unbelievable," he said.
Radcliffe also gave a shoutout to the musical's production team, the Tony organizers, the Merrily We Roll Along original writers, his agent, dresser, and singing teacher, as well as his dad, whom he greeted a Happy Father's Day.
Radcliffe rose to fame as the student wizard Harry Potter, whom he portrayed in the popular fantasy franchise from 2001 to 2011.
In 2023, he got his first Emmy nomination for portraying Weird Al in the biopic Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.
At the backstage, Radcliffe told THR he had no idea what his career would be after Harry Potter.
"I’d already started doing some stage stuff, but I didn’t know what the future held at all," he said.
"Playing one character for a long time builds up in you a desire to do as many things as you possibly can. So yeah, I’m doing that right now.”
Merrily We Roll Along tells the story of three friends' lives over 20 years. It begins in the present day when they already grew apart and goes backward to when they became friends.
