Kelly Clarkson reportedly claimed ex Brandon Blackstock told her she wasn't 'sexy' enough for 'The Voice'
Kelly Clarkson claimed that her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock previously told her she was not a “sex symbol” type like Rihanna to be a judge on The Voice.
The Grammy award winner allegedly told the California labor commissioner about the incident last year, as seen in the new court documents obtained by The New York Post.
According to documents, the American Idol alumni talked about wanting to be a judge on The Voice "for years" with her ex-husband and manager Blackstock “for years." However, he seemingly disapproved and allegedly said that NBC executives preferred someone who is “more sex symbol type” like Rihanna to join the show.
Blackstock also reportedly told her that the network was looking for a diverse panel of coaches and "had to have someone that was Black." He furthered that she was "too similar" to the former coach and country singer Blake Shelton, who the ex-husband also managed.
Asked to give more details, the Since U Been Gone singer said: “Well, a wife doesn’t forget a time she gets told she’s not a sex symbol, so that stays.”
Clarkson joined the 14th season of The Voice in 2018 and coached the season’s winner Brynn Cartelli. She was a part of the talent competition for a total of nine seasons.
In November, Clarkson won the legal ruling regarding Blackstock’s overcharging of fees for booking her projects from 2018 to 2020, including The Voice and her TV appearances for Norwegian Cruise Lines, Wayfair, and the Billboard Music Awards when it should have been managed by Clarkson’s Creative Artists Agency.
Blackstock was ordered to repay her over $2.6 million (over P144 million) for the unlawful business deals.
Clarkson filed for divorce from Blackstock in June 2020 after being married for nearly seven years. It was finalized in March 2022 with her agreeing to a one-time payment of $1.3 million (over P70 million), spousal support of $115,000 (over P6 million), and monthly child support payment of $45,601 (nearly P2.5 million) until January 2024.
They share two children, River Rose and Remington Alexander.
