Shakira reveals she found out Gerard Piqué 'betrayed' her while her dad was in the ICU

Shakira recently spoke out about how she found out about her ex-partner's betrayal, over a year after their split.

In a cover story by People en Español, the 46-year-old singer-songwriter revealed that she discovered her ex-partner of 11 years, Spanish football player Gerard Piqué, had cheated on her shortly after her father, William Mebarak Chadid, was hospitalized for a bad fall.

"He went to Barcelona to console me after I was consumed with sadness because of my separation," said Shakira. "While he was at Milan’s first communion, he was gravely injured in an accident. Everything happened at once. My home was falling apart,” she recalled. 

The Hips Don't Lie singer said that she found out about the news through the media "while my dad was in the ICU."

"I thought I wouldn't survive so much," she added. "The man I have loved the most in my life, my father, was leaving me when I needed him the most. I couldn’t talk to him, or go to my best friend for the advice I needed so much,” she said. 

Talking about her 91-year-old father, Shakira said he is her “biggest example of resilience.” 

“[He] is a wonderful man and an endearing character who surprises us all with his strength,” she said. 

Shakira and Gerald first announced their split through a joint statement in June 2022. They share two sons named Milan and Sasha. 

Months after their split, Shakira released a song collaboration with Argentine producer Bizarrap titled BZRP Music Session #53, which reportedly shades her ex-partner and his 24-year-old girlfriend Clara Chia Marti. The two became Instagram official in January.
