Ordinary citizens who went viral online in 2024

Published Dec 30, 2024 2:25 pm

Memes and viral moments come and go, but some of them make their mark and define the year.

2024 was intense—from natural calamities and political feuds to the cost of goods continuing to rise. In the midst of it all, memes have served as a breather from time to time. This year, some ordinary citizens have shown that you don't have to be an influencer or a celebrity to be a trendsetter. These personalities took social media by storm with their wit, meme-worthy phrases, and actions, or simply their funny content online.

From the Maybe This Time dance craze to the "very demure" catchphrase, here are the trendsetters who drew laughs and spread good vibes this 2024.

Carol Batay

As lawmakers probed Philippine offshore gaming operations (POGO) and dismissed Bamban mayor Alice Guo, who had two POGO hubs in her bailiwick, Carol Batay served as a live interpreter for resource persons.

Batay, a pharmacist-turned-host, first attended the Senate Committee on Women, Children, Family Relations, and Gender Equality's hearing in May.

But her appearance at hearings is not her first time in the limelight. In case you didn’t know, she was a housemate in Pinoy Big Brother’s Double Up edition in 2009. Her batchmates include celebrity couple Melai Cantiveros and Jason Francisco (who became the big winner and third placer, respectively), singer-actor Bartolome Mott (who adopted the screen name Tom Rodriguez), and model-actress Sam Pinto.

In an interview with PhilSTAR L!fe, Batay shared that she joined the reality TV series in hopes of bringing home the P1 million cash prize to fund her medical school at the time. After she was evicted on Day 77, Batay opted not to pursue showbiz and has since found herself doing different jobs—from being a language instructor, and interpreter, to being an events host.

After the Senate's last hearing about POGO wrapped up this month, Batay looked back on her journey, saying she couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity.

“This experience has humbled me and taught me lessons that I wouldn't have learned otherwise. It is indeed one of the most challenging projects I have handled, but also a fulfilling one. I promise to come back stronger and wiser as I continue to walk in this journey,” she wrote in an Instagram post.

Querubin Llavore

Tawag Ng Tanghalan alum Querubin Llavore made headlines in June for her random photos in a fancy red car during her stay in Dubai, which drew laughs on social media.

In her Facebook post, she detailed the weird turn of events that led to the pictures.

"Nasa ground floor ako, inaantay ko 'yung pinag-orderan ko ng pagkain. Nagtatanong siya saan daw yung location ko para ma-deliver niya 'yung food sa'akin," Llavore recounted.

After taking a picture of the hotel, she did not notice that there was a red car outside. Because of this, the owner assumed she was taking a photo of the vehicle and told her, "Come here, take a picture with my car."

While the local singer tried to explain that she was taking a picture of something else, the man remained persistent and said, "Come on, don’t be shy."

“Edi nahiya din ako tumanggi. Imbes nag-aantay lang ako ng order ko, nakapag-picture pa ako sa mamahaling sasakyan," Llavore wrote. The post gained 160,000 laughing reactions at the time.

Llavore also previously went viral with her ugly crying to wacky pose when she was announced as the winner in the talent competition in 2022.

Ralp Xyrel Villaruz, a student from Zamboanga, took social media by storm when he popularized the Maybe This Time dance craze on TikTok.

His playful dance to the ballad was a hit not just with social media users but also with the entertainment industry.

Celebrities including Dennis Trillo, two-time Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo, BINI's Sheena Catacutan, and even Sarah Geronimo hopped on the dance craze.

The viral moment brought Villaruz to It’s Showtime and ASAP, where he was joined by the variety shows’ hosts and their audience in doing the dance craze.

In September, Villaruz was also given a certificate of appreciation by the City Government of Zamboanga “for being a remarkable source of inspiration to everyone.”

"Your passion, resilience, and unwavering commitment to excellence has significantly impacted the lives of fellow Zamboanguenos," Mayor John Dalipe said. "Your impact will be felt for the years to come inspiring future generations to embrace their potential and pursue their dreams."

Jools Lebron

Jools Lebron, a TikToker from Chicago, earned fame after she got the internet saying "very demure, very mindful.”

In her viral video, Jools was showing off her look for work. “You see how I do my makeup for work? Very demure, very mindful," she said in the video.

"I don't come to work with a green cut crease... I don't do too much. I'm very mindful while I'm at work." The video has garnered 54.8 million views as of writing.

The catchphrase “very demure, very mindful” had people doing daily tasks in a "very cutesy" way. Celebrities such as RuPaul, Paramore's Hayley Williams, Nadine Lustre, Michelle Dee, and Gabbi Garcia hopped on the trend.

The use of the catchphrase was so huge that Dictionary.com named “demure” as this year’s word of the year

The online publisher noted its 1,200% increase in usage between January and the end of August this year, which its lexicographers attribute to Jools’ viral TikTok video.

Rachelyn Montero

Rachelyn Montero took the spotlight for her meme-worthy facial expressions during the House of Representatives' probe into former president Rodrigo Duterte's bloody drug war campaign last November.

During the inquiry, Montero was seen in frame as she was seated just behind Duterte and former senator Leila De Lima. The camera caught her meme-worthy reaction to Duterte appearing to want to throw a punch at De Lima. Montero had raised her eyebrow and rolled her eyes at the former president.

Her reaction drew laughs on social media. Cartoonist Kevin Raymundo of the popular web series Tarantadong Kalbo even made an entire caricature of the moment.

In an interview with L!fe, Montero, who serves as an executive assistant to De Lima, explained that while her reaction was meme-worthy, it was her act of resistance against such violent actions.

“Si Manay (De Lima) man 'yun or hindi, kung babae 'yung inambahan ng lalaki—kahit hindi siya sa Quad Comm nangyari, kahit nasa kanto 'yan, kahit nasa kalsada 'yan—I think I will be reacting the same kasi hindi dapat natin ginagawang normal lang na umaamba 'yung lalaki sa babae," she said.

She stressed that normalizing these acts only fuels the prevalence of violence against women that shouldn't ever be tolerated.

"Okay natatawa kayo, pero sana, more than the funny side, nakikita natin kung ano 'yung totoong situation on that. Kasi nakita ng mga tao na, 'Ay ang tapang niya, natarayan niya si Duterte.' No, it was not my intention, but 'yun 'yung situation and feeling ko natural instinct 'yun sa babae," she said.

"Hindi lang nga dapat sa babae eh, dapat pati sa taong alam kung ano 'yung tama at mali. For sure kaya maraming naka-relate kasi alam nila na mali 'yung nangyari sa sitwasyon na 'yun," she added.

Arman Salon

Arman Macasusi, better known as Arman Salon, went viral when a foreign X user reposted his TikTok skit pretending to be dead in a coffin, scaring viewers with his eyes suddenly opening and closing.

“Crazy, during a funeral a woman opened her eyes," the account wrote. "Technically this rarely can happen with a dead body and Embalmers usually sew or glue the eyelids shut precisely for this reason, to avoid false alarms. But I’m not sure if in this case she actually is alive. Imagine seeing your mother like that. Insane."

The reposted video, which got over 16.7 million views, garnered various reactions from social media users. Some were shocked and in disbelief, while others said it was fake. A community note was also posted along with the video that stated, "Misleading. This is Arman Salon a Tiktok star from the Philippines. The clip is only for a specific skit.”

Arman is a Rizal-based hairstylist who rose to fame with his dramatic skits on TikTok. In his previous interview with Kapuso Mo Jessica Soho, he shared that he has always wanted to be an actor.

"Gusto ko mag-artista kahit 'yung mahagip lang ng camera," he said. "Kahit na snatcher ako, kundi naman 'yung tsismosa. Masaya na ako."

He has since collaborated with local actors like Nadine Lustre, Romnick Sarmienta, and Barbie Forteza. He also auditioned for Cinemalaya and even made an appearance during the Isang Himala Grand Launch last Dec. 4.
