‘Squid Game’ season 2 features the return of two characters and a ‘whole new round’

Squid Game is officially returning for a second season, and it looks like the games will be deadlier.

Netflix confirmed that Squid Game has been greenlit for a second season on Instagram, which also includes a letter penned by the series creator and director Hwang Dong-hyuk.

The teaser includes a video clip featuring the infamous motion-sensing animatronic doll from Squid Game’s “Red Light, Green Light” game in the first episode. “On your marks. Get set. Greenlight. Squid Game continues, only on Netflix,” the caption reads.

In a separate post, Donghyuk announced that a “whole new round” of the games is coming while thanking the fans for their support of the show.

“It took 12 years to bring the first season of Squid Game to life last year. But it took 12 days for Squid Game to become the most popular Netflix series ever. As the writer, director, and producer of Squid Game, a huge shoutout to the fans around the world. Thank you for watching and loving our show,” Donghyuk wrote.

Donghyuk also confirmed that Seong Gihun (Lee Jung-jae) and The Frontman (Lee Byung-hun) are returning for the second season. He also teased possible comebacks and new characters.

“The man in the suit with ddakji might be back. You’ll also be introduced to Young-hee’s boyfriend, Cheol-su. Join us once more for a whole new round,” he added.

To recall, Young-hee is the name of the doll that was featured in the series’ first episode. Her name is based on the Korean textbook Chulsoo and Younghee which revolves around two best friends reenacting bizarre childhood memories.

The series’ creator and Netflix, however, didn’t reveal when Squid Game season two will premiere on the streaming platform.

In a May 2022 interview with Vanity Fair, Donghyuk hinted that the second season will be “more dramatic” than the first. He also revealed that the series would revolve around the concept of humanity being put to the test.

The first season of Squid Game tells the story of contestants desperately in need of money who compete in deadlier versions of Korean childhood games.

Apart from Jung-jae and Byung-hun, the series also stars Park Hae-soo, Jung Ho-yeon, Wi Ha-jun, Lee Yoo-mi, Anupam Tripathi, Kim Joo-ryeong, Oh Yeong-su, Heo Sung-tae, and Gong Yoo, among others.

The survival series became the first Korean series to top Netflix’s top 10 weekly most-watched shows.
