Trigger warning: This article contains mentions of rape.

Brooke Shields revealed that a plastic surgeon did an “irreversible” bonus procedure during her labia surgery without her consent.

In an interview with Us Weekly, the Pretty Baby star recalled getting labia reduction surgery in her 40s, per a recommendation from her gynecologist, after suffering from bleeding and chaffing since she was high school.

She talked about it in detail in her memoir, Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed to Get Old: Thoughts on Aging as a Woman.

“I’d be lying if I said I’m not embarrassed to share this very intimate information,” she wrote, according to the media outlet. “But, if we are to change the way we approach and talk about women’s health, then we need to bring up the uncomfortable but very real issues,” she added. “Shame is no longer an option.”

She looked back on her conversation with the male plastic surgeon who did the procedure, saying she was “dumbfounded” when the latter told her he “threw in a little bonus.” Per Shields, the doctor said that apart from labia reduction, he also did rejuvenation, or vaginal tightening, which she did not consent to.

“It felt like such an invasion—such a bizarre, like, rape of some kind,” she told Us Weekly.

The 59-year-old actress recalled how the doctor “proudly explained” to her what he did.

“Nothing pointed toward this need to be tighter or smaller or firmer or younger, especially there,” she said, noting that she did not want the “irreversible” procedure.

While she and her gynecologist were enraged, Shields did not talk about the experience for the “longest time”—not even to her husband, producer Chris Hency—as it left her with shame and anger.

She also decided not to pursue any action against the surgeon. “I thought, I don’t want anybody else telling me what I have to do,” she said.
