Messi's World Cup victory photos beat stock egg image's record as most liked Instagram post
Football star Lionel Messi's Instagram post about Argentina's penalty shoot-out World Cup win against France is now the most liked post in the social media platform.
Messi's post, which shows a photo of him lifting the championship trophy, as well as his celebration with teammates, has 68.5 million likes and counting, Guinness World Records posted on its website.
The 35-year-old athlete just dethroned the previous record holder, @world_record_egg, whose post of a stock image of a brown egg against a white background last January 2019 got over 55.7 million likes, based on Guinness World Records' last verification. The said post now has 57.7 million likes and counting.
Guinness World Records added that Messi also set other records, such as:
- Most Man of the Match awards won at the FIFA World Cup: 11
- First person to assist at five different FIFA World Cups
- Most FIFA World Cup matches played in by a player: 26
- Most FIFA World Cup appearances as captain: 19
- Most appearances in FIFA World Cup tournaments by a player (male): 5
- Most FIFA World Cup matches played in by a player: 26
@world_record_egg, meanwhile, acknowledged Messi's feat on Instagram Stories, looking back at how it made internet history four years ago.
"Today @leomessi has taken the crown," but noted "for now" in parenthetical remarks alongside a pair of eyes emoji. It also asked followers who's the greatest of all time between Messi and long-time rival Cristiano Rolando of Portugal.
Messi, meanwhile, in another Instagram post shared photos of him sleeping with the World Cup trophy. It has 46.9 million likes and counting, seemingly set to yet again crack @world_record_egg's original record.
Previous most-liked Instagram posts acknowledged by Guinness World Records are the following:
