‘The Batman’ is getting a Penguin series spin-off with Colin Farrell on HBO Max
A spin-off series focusing on the character of Penguin from Warner Bros. film The Batman has officially been ordered for HBO Max.
Colin Farrell will reprise his role as Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot/The Penguin after starring as the famous villain in the recently released Matt Reeves directed film, which introduced Robert Pattinson as the latest version of the Dark Knight, alongside Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman.
Based on the characters created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger for DC, the upcoming spin-off series will follow the villain, as he rises through the ranks of Gotham’s criminal underworld.
HBO and Warner Media confirmed the straight-to-series order, which has a working title of The Penguin on Wednesday (March 9) in a press release and social media.
Lauren LeFranc will write and serve as showrunner on the series, which will expand the world Reeves created with The Batman.
LeFranc will also serve as executive producer alongside Reeves, Dylan Clark and Farrell.

“The world that Matt Reeves created for The Batman is one that warrants a deeper gaze through the eyes of Oswald Cobblepot,” said Farrell. “I couldn’t be more excited about continuing this exploration of Oz as he rises through the darkened ranks to become The Penguin. Will be good to get him back on the streets of Gotham for a little madness and a little mayhem.”
“Colin exploded off the screen as the Penguin in The Batman, and having the chance to thoroughly explore the inner life of that character on HBO Max is an absolute thrill,” Reeves said in a statement. “Dylan and I are so excited to work with Lauren in continuing Oz’s story as he grabs violently for power in Gotham.”
No release window has been announced for The Penguin spin-off series at HBO Max. The Batman debuted in Philippine cinemas on March 2 and is currently showing in local cinemas nationwide and internationally.
The neo-noir superhero film has reportedly grossed $134 million at the North American box office and $124 million internationally in its first weekend for a $258 million global launch. The critically acclaimed film is certified fresh at 86 percent on Rotten Tomatoes from more than 400 reviews.
