Nicole Scherzinger proud to be with incredible cast of Filipinos in ‘Trese’
Nicole Scherzinger of The Pussycat Dolls expressed her excitement to be part of the anime adaptation of the Filipino comic book Trese which will stream on Netflix this coming June 11.
Across her social media accounts, the Filipino-American singer wrote: “So excited to announce that I’ll be joining my girl (Shay Mitchell) and an incredible cast of other Filipinos as part of ‘Trese’, a @Netflix original anime series coming 6/11.”
“I’m so proud to be a part of such a diverse project which brings visibility to beautiful stories, talent and voices from our Pinoy culture! Happy AAPI month everyone!” she posted on her Instagram and Twitter accounts along with a Philippine flag emoji.

The Pussycat Dolls' lead singer, born in Hawaii to parents of native Hawaiian and Filipino descent, has previously expressed pride in being part Filipino. Her father hails from the Batanes islands of the Philippines.
The Sing-Off and The X-Factor UK judge previously voiced Sina, the mother of Moana in the Disney animated film.
Sherzinger will be voicing Miranda Trese, alongside Shay Mitchell (Pretty Little Liars), who was previously announced as the voice of Alexandra Trese in the English-language version of the series. The titular character is voiced by Liza Soberano in the Filipino language dub.
Trese, the animated series coming to Netflix next month, is based on a series of Philippine graphic novels by Budjette Tan and KaJo Baldisimo. Jay Oliva (Justice League Dark,The Legend of Korra) serves as the series' showrunner and director.
"Set in a Manila where the mythical creatures of Philippine folklore live in hiding amongst humans, Alexandra Trese finds herself going head to head with a criminal underworld comprised of malevolent supernatural beings," the official synopsis saids.
Trese’s English voice dub is stacked with voice talents coming from actors of Filipino descent, including Glee alum Darren Cris as Marco, Lou Diamond Phillips (Stand and Deliver) as Mayor Sancho Santamaria, Jon Jon Briones (Ratched) as Hank/Xa-Mul, Manny Jacinto (The Good Place) as Maliksi, Griffin Puatu (Spider-Man: Miles Morales) as The Kambal/Bantay, and Eric Bauza (Transformers, Ben 10) as Bagyon Lektro and Nuno the Snitch.
Dante Basco, who played Lost Boy leader Rufio in 1991’s Hook and voiced Prince Zuko in the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, voices Bagyon Kulimlim.
In an interview with VICE, Trese writer Budjette Tan and illustrator Kajo Baldisimo shared the inspiring journey of the comics to the small screen. According to the Trese creators, the graphic novels were first published in photocopied format back in 2005 as a passion project.
Starting with only 30 photocopies priced at less than one dollar each at Comic Quest, the comics were subsequently published as a series of black and white graphic novels by Visprint, Inc. under the Alamat Comics imprint in 2008.
As of April 2021, the Trese franchise has spawned seven main series books as well as various spin-offs and collaborative titles.

The six-episode animated adaptation of the Pinoy comic series is scheduled to debut on Netflix on June 11, 2021.
