This NSFW ‘SpongeBob’ fandub is better than any reboot
SpongeBob SquarePants has remained relevant as ever as a cartoon series that aired in the ’90’s. Although many of its fans have grown up, they did not outgrow this funny little show about a quirky little sponge that lives in a pineapple under the sea.
And with that came memes, with SpongeBob making its mark on internet culture. Nowadays, even hardcore fans are having doubts since the quality of the show dropped after season 4. And to much consternation, Viacom has announced that they’ll be doing a Squidward Netflix spinoff and Kamp Koral, which features 10-year-old SpongeBob at summer camp.
But if you want to recapture good ol’ SpongeBob humor as well as dark comedy found in many adult-oriented shows, a YouTuber under the alias Uncle Al has created fan-made dubs of certain franchises, and his most popular one is his Krusty Kooch Chronicles.
You can watch your favorite SpongeBob characters get stuck in zany situations such as Squidward trying to secretly eat Chef Boyardee Beefaroni during his lunch breaks, to Mr. Krabs trying to expand his business by selling “canned coochie.”
There’s also familiar situations where Plankton gets into a scheme of marrying Mr. Krabs to steal the Krabby Patty Formula in “Plankton’s Plan C” and Spongebob trying to get Squidward into the Christmas spirit in “A Very Squidward Christmas.”
What makes these fandubs so popular is that Uncle Al can accurately mimic the voice acting of most of the characters in SpongeBob. However, his SpongeBob voice seems to have suffered from smoking one too many cigarettes. But hearing it long enough, it’ll start to grow on you, as well as reminding you that this isn’t Hillenburg’s SpongeBob, but a well-made, fan deviation that’s entertaining enough on its own.
These videos are also faithful to the tone of the original show, to the point where the original tracks are used to drive in the jokes. The situations are set up like actual SpongeBob episodes (albeit, shorter than usual).
Of course it has some humor for mature audiences, but it’s done in a way where it seems more like a natural progression from the show, than a forced “oh-so-edgy” way. So keep it away from the kiddos when watching.
The current season has also progressed from sh*tposts to a weird, accurate commentary on internet culture, such as “Squidward Makes A Meme” where Patrick goads on Squidward to create his own memes, and “The Cancelled Krab” where Plankton digs up old, mildly off-color tweets in an attempt to get Mr. Krabs cancelled.
