As Swiss novelist Johanna Spryi once said, "Many strange things happen in this world." And 2022 has seen some interesting affairs—from a new virus outbreak to war, the "quiet quitting" trend, and whatever Elon Musk is doing with Twitter.
Big news aside, the year was also filled with odd, bizarre happenings from all over the world that will either make you smile and laugh or leave you confused and think "how did that happen?"
To close out the year, PhilSTAR L!fe looks back at some of the most outlandish stories that tickled our funny bones and caught our curiosity in 2022.
Snake bites girl, girl bites back
Revenge seekers say it's an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. For a two-year-old girl in Turkey, it's a bite for a bite—against a 20-inch snake.
Neighbors from Kantar village in Bingol rushed after hearing a young girl scream as she found an unknown snake species in her backyard in August. They found a bit mark on the girl's lip and saw the reptile, which the lass was initially playing with, clamped in her mouth.
She was later taken to the hospital and luckily the snake bite wasn't fatal. What happened to the snake, you may ask? Well, it wasn't slippery enough to avoid death.
Angelina Jolie 'nagpa-tempered glass'
Filipinos had a jolly good time over a photo of Angelina Jolie in a market in Cambodia.
They thought the actress was in Greenhills Mall or Divisoria because of the market's bright fluorescent lights and phones in glass displays.
"Si Angelina Jolie nagpa-tempered glass sa Divisoria (Cambodia branch), they joked.
Jolie was actually in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh, which is known for its bustling restaurants, markets, and bars catering to tourists and netizens alike.
The man who was deemed 'too big' down there
In a report by the New York Post, a man said he was rejected from a job because of his large penis.
The man, who described his member as "thicker than his forearm," was thought to be having an erection during the interview by the examiners, despite wearing underwear to keep his penis from "falling out."
"They thought I had an erection throughout this whole interview, and they were very much like, 'Your attire wasn't right.' They clearly meant, 'We can see your d**k.'"
Indian man hasn't put his arm down for 10 years
There's no stopping an individual when they have strong conviction—a man in India proved this as he went viral on Reddit for keeping his right arm up for a decade because of it was a way to honor his God.
The devout man said he doesn't even notice that his hand is raised, anymore, even when he's sleeping. While it feels numb, he's still able to do chores and tasks with his left hand.
If you thought that was crazy, here's the kicker—he's planning to keep his arm up for the rest of his life.
Eyebrow tattoo botch
How many hours do you spend a day making sure your eyebrows are on fleek? This woman in Thailand tried to make sure hers always looked correct by getting them tattooed but the outcome wasn't what she expected.
When she stepped out of the clinic, she came out with a new set of eyebrows directly above her natural ones.
When she went back to the clinic, she found that it had been closed down and the owners were unreachable for contact.
Fortunately, she solved here double eyebrows blunder and got it fixed. Always remember kids, tattoos are permanent and expensive to remove.
Lawmaker files anti-ghosting bill
Strange laws have been passed in the House of Representatives this year like the bill protecting heterosexual rights, which drew the ire of the LGBTQ+ community. Another bill had netizens buzzing: the one declaring ghosting as an emotional offense.
For those who might be unfamiliar with the term, "ghosting" happens when someone you've been talking to (like a romantic partner) suddenly cuts off all contact without explanation.
Lawmaker Negros Oriental Third District Rep. Arnolfo Teves, however, did not specify penalties meted out to ghosters in his proposal.
While it can hurt like hell emotionally for the ghosted, Filipinos questioned the need for this as they thought other issues should've been prioritized.
Girl bashes cheating boyfriend in the paper
Was 2022 the year of the cheaters? Big names like Adam Levine and Try Guys' Ned Fulmer were reported to be cheating on their wives. One woman in Australia put her cheating boyfriend on blast, taking out an entire page from her local newspaper to tell the world about her unfaithful lover.
"Dear Steve, I hope you're happy with her," the page reads. "Now the whole town will know what a filthy cheater you are."
To end the scalding ad, the woman added that she bought the ad using the man's credit card. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.
