WATCH: Trailer for ‘Home Alone’ remake on Disney Plus is here

Published Oct 13, 2021 1:23 pm

The official trailer for Home Sweet Home Alone, the Disney Plus reimagining of the original 1990 classic holiday movie Home Alone, has been released.

This Christmas-set comedy centers around 10-year-old Max Mercer, played by Jojo Rabbit star Archie Yates, who is accidentally left behind by his family as they leave for vacation in Tokyo, Japan.

Much like Macalauy Culkin’s Kevin McCallister, Max must face off against inexperienced robbers Pam (Bridesmaid’s Ellie Kemper) and Jeff (Hobbs & Shaw’s Rob Delaney) to defend his home.

Irish actress Aisling Bea (Living with Yourself) plays the role of Carol, Max’s mother, taking over the role made famous by Catherine O’Hara as Kevin’s mom in the original film and 1992 sequel Home Alone: Lost in New York.

The trailer for the upcoming movie suggests that it will be less like a follow-up film and more like a shot-for-shot remake with very similar dialogue and scenes pulled directly from the beloved ’90s classic, brought to life for a new generation of viewers with new actors.

The film is the first new installment in the long-running Home Alone franchise since the ABC Family movie Home Alone: The Holiday Heist released in 2012.

In the trailer, Yates’ character Max is shown drawing up battle plans for the house on his wall, stuffing himself with junk food, coming up with elaborate house traps against the robbing couple, and taking down invaders dressed up as Santa Claus with Nerf guns.

Home Sweet Home Alone is written by Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell, both of Saturday Night Live fame, and directed by Dan Mazer (Dirty Grandpa). It was previously teased that the film would have some notable throwback cameos.

In one scene in the trailer, a policeman is seen coming to the house, wearing a nametag that reads McCallister. According to IMDb, the character’s name is Buzz, making him Buzz McCallister, Kevin’s older brother.

While the film's poster and trailer states that "Holiday classics are meant to be broken," fans will have to wait and see just how this film holds up to the original. Watch the official trailer below.

Home Sweet Home Alone premieres on Disney Plus on Nov. 12, 2021.
