Apple to launch faster M2 chip, four new Macs, including a more colorful MacBook Air, this 2022—report

Several new Macs and MacBooks are reportedly coming this year and they are said to come with an all-new M2 chip.

While there isn't a lot of information out there yet about the power the M2 processor will tout, Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman says it's expected to be slightly faster than the 2020-released M1.

It will also reportedly share the same eight-core architecture but get additional GPU cores, with nine and 10-core graphics options—a big bump from the seven- and eight-core GPUs the first M1 chip has.

In 2020, Apple announced its first in-house chip and launched beefed-up versions of it, the M1 Pro and M1 Max last year.

Gurman also shared that four devices are expected to carry the new Apple Silicon, including the 2022 versions of the 13-inch MacBook Pro, Mac Mini, 24-inch iMac, and a redesigned MacBook Air.

The next MacBook Air is slated to feature drastic changes in its aesthetic. Instead of the usual muted colors, the upcoming laptops are rumored to get poppier hues similar to the iMac like green, blue, yellow, orange, pink, silver, and purple. Bezels will also go from black to white.

As for when we might see these new Macs, Gurman says we can expect to see the new Macs first in March, then in May or June. Apple is currently rumored to hold a March 8 event where it will launch a new budget 5G iPhone SE, a 5G iPad Air, and one new Mac.

The event might also see the rollout of iOS 15.4, which will finally allow Face ID to work even when you're wearing a face mask.
