There's a university in Canada offering classes on Drake and The Weeknd

A university in Ontario, Canada is giving students a chance to study Drake and The Weeknd.

Ryerson University will offer a course called "Deconstructing Drake & The Weeknd," which will dissect the lyrics of the two artists. It will be taught by Dalton Higgins, who has given lectures on Black music and hip hop, and has written six books on it.

"It's time to get our Canadian rap and R&B icons recognized and canonized academically or otherwise," Higgins told CNN. "It is critical for scholars and historians to examine the Toronto music scene that birthed Drake/Weeknd and helped create the conditions for them to become mega-successful."

"What people tend to forget about Drake is that he's actually a great writer," the professor added. "In his rhymes, he employs all kinds of literary devices like metaphors, iambic pentameter, similes, so we're going to deconstruct his lyrics and examine how he puts his songs together."

The class will be one of the flagship courses under the university's The Creative School Professional Music BA program. The college's dean, Charles Falzon, told CNN that enthusiasm for the class is already "quite significant" even before registration started. "I have a feeling it'll pack up very quickly."
