WATCH: Netflix drops exciting teaser trailer for live-action 'Yu Yu Hakusho'
The live-action Yu Yu Hakusho or Ghost Fighter is just full of spirit!
Netflix has released the teaser trailer for its live-action adaptation of the classic Japanese manga of the same name, and it's filled with action-packed sequences that every fan has been yearning for.
The trailer begins with a bleak atmosphere as the show's protagonist, Yusuke Urameshi, looks down and sees his bloodied body lying on the ground after a sudden accident. Despite attempts by the medics to revive him, his heartbeat flatlines, and Yusuke could only ask in disbelief, "Am I dead?"
The scene then cuts to the young delinquent meeting Koenma, the son of the Underworld's ruler, as well as Botan, a spirit charged with ferrying souls of the deceased to the Spirit World.
Koenma then gives Yusuke an offer that he can't refuse: "I'm sending you back to life. In exchange, you'll be a Spirit Detective. Surely you won't refuse since we're reviving you."
The teaser then spotlights the other main characters of the series, including Kurama, Hiei, and Kuwabara, each showing off their special powers and abilities.
However, things turn foreboding for the heroes as the Toguro brothers, a pair of highly dangerous demons who are one of the more famous antagonists of the show, are hired to fight against them. The trailer reaches an exciting end as Yusuke, Kurama, and Hiei give their best effort to take the younger Toguro down.
Yu Yu Hakusho follows junior high school student Yusuke as he suddenly becomes a ghost after dying in an accident while trying to save a child. He meets a spirit guide named Botan, who tells him that he will be given a chance to be revived since he performed an act of goodness despite his delinquency.
After becoming a Spirit Detective tasked with investigating the supernatural, Yusuke is then pulled into a spectacular adventure enveloping the human, demon, and spirit worlds.
Takumi Kitamura will take on the role of the protagonist Yusuke while Kurama, Hiei, and Kuwabara will be played by actors Jun Shison, Kanata Hongo, and Shuhei Uesugi, respectively.
The cast also includes Kotone Furukawa as Botan, Keita Machida as Koenma, and Go Ayano as Younger Toguro.
In an interview with IGN, director Sho Tsukikawa said that he wanted to highlight the relationship and battles in Yu Yu Hakusho and shared that there would be plenty of action scenes that use "cutting-edge technology."
"When I first heard about Yu Yu Hakusho receiving a live-action adaptation, I honestly wondered if it would even be possible—but after being presented with the producer’s vision and possibilities with Netflix, my expectations grew and I found myself burning with passion to make this project come to life. More than anything, I think the appeal of Yu Yu Hakusho comes from its characters, which is why I wanted to highlight the appealing relationships and battles in Yu Yu Hakusho," Tsukikawa said.
The live-action adaptation will premiere on Netflix on Dec. 14.
