Netflix gives 'One Piece' the greenlight for Season 2
Just two weeks after its premiere, One Piece has been hailed as the “greatest” live-action adaptation of a manga series by Netflix users. And now, it has been given the go signal to produce a second season.
The streaming service on Friday tweeted "ONE PIECE HAS BEEN RENEWED," while also sharing a message from the manga author, Eiichiro Oda.
“To everyone who’s been a fan of One Piece for years, and to those who experienced One Piece for the first time, thank you so much. Two weeks after the launch, I just received some great news…Netflix has decided to renew the show,” said Oda in his message.
"The adventures of Iñaki and the live-action Straw Hats will continue onward!"
The live-action adaptation has been watched more than 37.8 million times in less than two weeks since it was released, and it is currently the most popular show on the English TV list. It also beat Stranger Things' record for holding the number-one spot for TV series in 93 countries. The Millie Bobby Brown-starrer had 83.
The TV iteration of the popular Japanese manga series tells the story of Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy) who wants to become the Pirate King and find the One Piece treasure.
Matt Owens and Steven Maeda are the writers, executive producers, and showrunners. Eiichiro Oda, Marty Adelstein, and Becky Clements will also executive produce. Godoy will reprise his role as Luffy. The cast will also include Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero as Usopp, and Taz Skylar as Sanji.
