Square Enix teases more ‘Final Fantasy VII’ spin-offs in the works
Final Fantasy VII fans have a lot of new games on various platforms to look forward to in the near future.
In addition to the “enhanced and expanded” Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade for next-gen consoles, there are two mobile game spin-offs on the way and more in the pipeline.
According to Square Enix creative director Tetsuya Nomura, “even more FFVII projects” in development were prompted by the release of FF7R in 2020.
Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier, released for mobile phones late last year, is set in Midgar 30 years before the events of Final Fantasy VII, before SOLDIER was established.
Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis, which hits mobile devices this 2022, is a “chapter-structured single player experience which will cover the whole of the FFVII timeline.”
Nomura and project producer, Yoshinori Kitase shared special messages including the announcement in a statement celebrating the original game’s 25th anniversary on Monday (Jan. 31).
Twenty five years ago today the original @FinalFantasy VII first launched in Japan, and to celebrate this very special anniversary we're delighted to present messages from both Yoshinori Kitase and Tetsuya Nomura. #FFVII25th pic.twitter.com/3Py8FwarIl

Nomura, who also worked on the original game, said the release of Final Fantasy VII Remake, alongside The First Soldier battle royale and the upcoming Ever Crisis, give him “a real sense of how more and more people are supporting FFVII. Not just the fans from the original game, but also those who never experienced it are being drawn to the unique world of FFVII."
"And there will be even more new FFVII projects that started up after the remaking coming in the future too. The team see this 25th anniversary as a waypoint on our journey with FFVII, and will continue pressing ahead to even greater things,” said Nomura.
Kitase, who was director of the original Final Fantasy VII, added: “You can look forward to even more exciting new developments in the future.”
There’s no word yet on what these upcoming projects are, but they'll come alongside the already-announced sequel to Final Fantasy VII Remake.
Final Fantasy VII Remake only featured the Midgar portion of the original game—around the first seven hours of the original—although an INTERmission DLC expansion added a new storlyine and Yuffie as a playable character to bridge the gap between the first and second parts.
Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis is set to arrive on Android and iPhone in 2022.
