‘Death to 2020’ mockumentary by 'Black Mirror' team drops on Netflix on Dec. 27
This year has felt like one really long extended real-life version of a Black Mirror episode.
The dystopian science fiction anthology known for depicting dark alternative presents or near futures in the same vein as Twilight Zone, has felt more like reality than fiction for most people around the world.
In fact, Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones, the creators of Black Mirror themselves, have said they couldn’t make this year up, but they do have something to add. Instead of telling another story about how technology can ruin our lives, their latest project takes a “comedic retrospective at 2020’s mad glory.”
The mockumentary Death to 2020 tells the story of the dreadful year that was, blending news footage with appearances from fictional characters.
Airing as a Netflix special, the 1 hour 10 minute long political comedy features a star-studded cast of familiar faces including Samuel L. Jackson as a reporter, Hugh Grant as a historian, Lisa Kudrow as a conservative spokesperson, Kumail Nanjiani as a CEO of a technology company, Tracey Ullman as Queen Elizabeth II, Leslie Jones as a behavioral psychologist, Cristin Milioti as a soccer mom and Joe Keery as a gig economy millennial. Lawrence Fishburne serves as narrator for the show.
In the official trailer released by Netflix Monday (Dec. 21), we get a sneak peek of the documentary mocking the state of the year 2020 highlighted by events of the COVID-19 pandemic, among other topics.
All episodes of Black Mirror are currently streaming on Netflix, while Death to 2020 will drop on the streaming platform on Dec. 27, just in time for people to bid farewell to the year.
