#FollowFriday: Pinoy Podcasters exclusively available on Spotify
With spending more time at home and the general lack of social interaction, sometimes you just want friendly conversation in the background to listen to. Whatever your interest is, there’s sure to be a podcast out there to pique your interest.
Digital music streaming and media services provider Spotify recently added nine Filipino fan favorite podcasts to their exclusive lineup.
According to Spotify, listening to audio content is a huge part of the everyday lives of Filipinos. “As Filipinos are looking for ways to be entertained, stay informed, and relax while spending more time at home, Podcasts can be the perfect companion,” said Spotify Head of Studios for Southeast Asia Carl Zuzarte.
The nine podcasts, hosted by local creators, cover a wide range of genres and topics from comedy to relationships to career advice.
For this week's #FollowFriday, listen to these new shows hosted by personalities like Joyce Pring, Inka Magnaye, and Filmmaker Antoinette Jadaone.
Popular Filipino television personality, host and radio DJ Joyce Pring shares tips and advice on being a 20-something-year-old, “traversing through life expectantly, and with gusto.” She discusses a variety of topics, from mental health and love to relationships and other life learnings in a breezy and relatable conversational manner.
From her initial podcast in October 2018, where she discussed the things she stopped doing in her 20s, she’s covered more current pandemic-related topics like coping with the new normal with a “quarantine bucket list,” how to start conversations with those struggling with mental health, and lots more.
Voiced by internet star and voice talent Inka Magnaye, Sleeping Pill with Inka is an ASMR-friendly audio show that takes listeners through soothing readings of books and poems with the goal of easing anxieties and helping people fall asleep. This new type of “lullaby” will have listeners drifting off to sleep in no time. Magnaye, known for being the voice behind those boarding announcements on PAL flights, has a distinctively calming and meditative voice that both chills and soothes. This podcast is literally a dream for insomniacs. There’s no need to count sheep when you’ve got this playing in the background.
Hosted by celebrity couple Jim Bacarro and Saab Magalona-Bacarro, this podcast is an outlet for the musicians to talk about their adventures in marriage and experiences as new parents. Their meandering drawn-out conversations, peppered with relatable couple banter, cover life musings, culture, movies, music, and other stuff they love/hate. Listening to them discuss random topics like the struggle of choosing a movie to watch together while eating dinner feels like you’re eavesdropping on your married friends.
Dubbed as a show for “KoolPals na hindi kupals,” this comedy podcast is hosted by GB Labrador, James Caraan, and Nonong Ballinan. The trio engage in lighthearted discussions about pop culture issues and the pulse of the nation. Their past episodes have covered trending topics like the PhilHealth corruption, white sand of Manila Bay, COVID vaccines, as well as more jovial conversations about first crushes and the qualities to look out for in a best friend.
Boiling Waters PH is a relationship-focused podcast that covers anything and everything about the dating and love world – from courtship and romance to manhood, memes and humor, nothing is off-limits in this series. The male-centric discussions between hosts cover topics like the “Bro Code,” LDR, ghosting, how to level up from being an “NBSB or NGSB,” safety tips on having a best friend of the opposite sex, and much more.
The Eve’s Drop is hosted by Delamar Arias, Francesca Tobias, and Gelli Victor, a trio of ladies known for their brutal honesty when it comes to love, life, and sex. The upbeat, buzzy podcast covers “real women talk” and all the drama, tears, and laughter that comes with it. The #EvesGang has discussed topics like choosing your battles at home while being in confined quarters, finding reprieves from cabin fever, quarantine trends, and Pride Month to name a few.
Ask Say is a podcast hosted by Say Tioco, an influencer and body positivity advocate who shares everything life has taught her about women’s health and sexuality. Her episodes explore themes of love, relationships, career, and traveling. Say introduces clear and concise topics with interviews of featured guests giving useful insights on interesting topics like solo traveling, dealing with anxiety during the pandemic, handling marriage expectations vs. realities and more.
Ang Walang Kwentang Podcast (which translates to The Nonsense Podcast in English) features conversations between filmmaker Antoinette Jadaone (That Thing called Tadhana, Alone/Together) and spoken-word artist Juan Miguel Severo. Both are college orgmates who chat casually with each other in a very relatable manner, sharing humorous and sometimes heartbreaking personal stories.
Described as “ang Podcast ng mga sawi,” Walwal Sesh is hosted by Doc Gia, Sir Renz, and Vino. The unscripted and all-inclusive conversations talk about love, heartbreak, mental health, equality, and sex, and much more. Snippets of sad love songs are sometimes played in the background, in between discussions of topics like self-care or self-partnering, friendship breakups, cheating, paasa, tips on coming out, and other difficult conversations.
