George R. R. Martin reveals that the Jon Snow sequel was actor Kit Harrington’s idea
Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin has revealed that actor Kit Harrington was the one who pitched the idea of a Jon Snow sequel.
The actor is attached to reprise his fan-favorite role in the first potential GOT project to take place after the events in the original series.
In a recent blog post, Martin confirmed the leaks going around online which originated from The Hollywood Reporter about the sequel being in early development at HBO. The author stated that spin-off’s working title will be Snow.

“Our working title for the show is SNOW,” he said. “There are four live-action successor shows in development at HBO… SNOW has been in development almost as long as the other three, but for whatever reason it was never announced and it never leaked… until now.”
Former co-star Emilia Clarke first dished on BBC and previously shared that the actor himself created Snow.
"It's been created by Kit as far as I can understand, so he's in it from the ground up," Clarke said. "So what you will be watching, hopefully, if it happens, is certified by Kit Harington."
Although HBO has not yet commented on the latest GOT developments and the author’s blog post, it seems that Harrington is heavily involved in this project.
“It seems as though Emilia Clarke has already mentioned that SNOW was Kit’s idea in a recent interview,” Martin added. “So, that part is out. Yes, it was Kit Harington who brought the idea to us. I cannot tell you the names of the writers/showrunners, since that has not been cleared for release yet… but Kit brought them in too, his own team, and they are terrific.”
He also confirmed that he is involved saying, “I am involved, just as I am with THE HEDGE KNIGHT and THE SEA SNAKE and TEN THOUSAND SHIPS, and all the animated shows,” he stated. “Kit’s team have visited me here in Santa Fe and worked with me and my own team of brilliant, talented writer/consultants to hammer out the show.”
Although the prequel series House of the Dragon, which is set to air this August on HBO, also happens in the same universe as Snow, it most likely won’t overlap as it is set hundreds of years before the events that transpired on Game of Thrones.
If it pushes through, Snow will be a direct continuation after eight seasons of Game of Thrones. In the eighth and final season which aired in 2019, Jon Snow discovered his true identity as Aegon Targaryen, a potential heir to the Iron Throne. In the finale, we saw Jon Snow, together with Tormund Giantsbane, return to Castle Black leading the wildlings back beyond the wall.
