WATCH: Is Cillian Murphy a zombie in new '28 Years Later' trailer?
The first trailer for 28 Years Later has dropped, and it appears Cillian Murphy is making an unexpected cameo.
The upcoming film is the third installment of zombie horror 28 Days Later, which first premiered in 2002.
28 Years Later is set in rural England nearly three decades after the "Rage" virus broke out. The apocalypse-causing virus returns and the film centers on a group of survivors living on a small island connected to the mainland. When one member of the group leaves the island on a mission to the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders, and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors, the synopsis read.
The new film stars Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes, Jack O'Connell, and Erin Kellyman.
Murphy starred in the first film of the series as bike courier Jim who woke up from a coma in a deserted city. Previous reports said he was returning for the 2025 film in addition to being an executive producer.
The first trailer shows Comer and Taylor-Johnson running and fighting off infected, and Fiennes covered in blood.
Between the thrilling and action-packed scenes, there's a glimpse of a zombie that resembles Murphy. Does this mean Jim got infected?
28 Years Later marks the return of Danny Boyle and Alex Garland as director and writer, respectively, since the first film. It was shot back-to-back with its sequel, 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple, directed by Nia DaCosta.
In September, tech website WIRED learned that the film was shot with a bunch of "adapted" iPhone 15 Pro Max devices. The first movie was also shot with cameras not typically used for Hollywood feature films, a Canon XL-1 digital camera.
28 Years Later will hit cinemas on June 20, 2025.
