Spider-Man comes to Marvel's Avengers exclusively on PS4 and PS5
The wall-crawling webhead swings his way into Marvel's Avengers, exclusively on the PS4 and PS5 game consoles as free DLC in early 2021.
This, according to Crystal Dynamics associate art director Jeff Adams, who broke the news on the Playstation Blog with a lengthy post about Spider-Man's comic book legacy.
Adams, who didn't shy away from flashing his geek cred, wrote about how much Spider-Man meant to him and continued on to say how the character's development in the game would be similar to the one from the comic book storyline, "The Commuter Cometh!"
In that story, Spider-Man hunts down a robber and finds himself in the flat, high-rise building-less suburbs where there wasn't a single elevated surface he could swing around on with his webs.
He says, "Watching Spider-Man adapt to new surroundings was such a great contrast to his status quo. That tone is exactly what we want to capture for him in Marvel’s Avengers. A familiar but fresh Spider-Man who needs to evolve to take on global threats alongside Earth’s Mightiest Heroes."
And if anyone remembers, that particular story was also referenced in a hilarious scene in the film Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Adams reveals more about Spider-Man's movement and combat. "When he’s arcing through the air on his web line, we want you to feel graceful and light, and be able to utilize a variety of web configurations and gadgets to enhance your traversal," he said.
Vince Napoli is Crystal Dynamics' lead combat designer for Marvel's Avengers, tasked with making sure that Spider-Man takes on villains and bad guys the way you want him to. "When Spider-Man takes on evil-doers, he’ll do so fluidly with his signature flair; but also, with the enhanced customization options we’ve created for Marvel’s Avengers." Adams continued. "Just like our other heroes, you’ll get to use the unique skill trees Vince and his team have designed to specialize how your Spider-Man plays in our world."
Players will be able to see a Spider-Man that pays homage to legendary comic book artists such as Steve Ditko and John Romita Sr., whose early works defined the character's design to this day.
"Fans can expect to see Ditko and Romita’s influence in our take on the hero," Adams said, adding, "with nods to other talented artists that have defined the character’s look over his long history."
Revealing more, Adams described Spider-Man's intro into Marvel's Avengers as an in-game event, stating that it eill be "a series of unique challenges for the hero to take on, testing his abilities, and yielding some exciting results."
Spider-Man is the second DLC character revealed for the post-release of the game. The first, Hawkeye, was revealed last week, but unlike everyone's friendly neighborhood web-slinger who is a Sony PlayStation exclusive, Clint Barton will grace all the platforms that Marvel's Avengers will appear in.
Marvel's Avengers releases for the PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One in early September, and it will also appear on the upcoming PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X when the next-gen consoles launch in the holidays later this year.
