Published Feb 15, 2024 1:09 pm

Love is a feeling that transcends cultures and generations. Because love fuels creative expression in every art form, there are multiple ways to show and express your love, and one of them is through memes.

Memes, no matter how shallow they may seem, are enough to let your significant other know that you're thinking of them and want to make them smile. You can mostly find them in your social media feed or even in everyday moments.

One creator, Niki Distrito, crafts memes that resonate with thousands, proving their relatable power. In an interview, Niki explains that he tackles real situations couples face and adds a dash of humor to it. His posts can be found in Subtle Crown Traits, an online private group on Facebook with over 871,000 members that features different love memes and funny quotes.

"I post content because I can relate to it. It started as a joke, but some of my posts got attention, making me realize that a lot of people can relate to them," he told PhilSTAR L!fe, adding that some of his posts are rooted in his "few personal experiences."

Love memes in online communities

Online communities, such as specialized groups like Subtle Clown Traits, provide fertile ground for love memes, making people connect and share their stories.

While most of Niki's content comes from pre-existing information, he recently started generating based on current scenarios and observations.

"Most of my posts are from my database, but recently I’ve been writing them [by observing] people’s situationships or talking stage because that’s where the content is," he shared.

Love memes focus on humorous yet romantic material, but others go beyond that—reflecting the complexities and difficulties of contemporary relationships as well as their quirks and peculiarities.

One such example is Niki's hit post about cheating, which garnered more than 31,000 reactions and over 3,300 comments as of writing.

He said this is by far his favorite post "because he has a friend who’s also like that" in the post.

Although the majority of his content is poking fun at the quirks of relationships through irony and paradoxes, he said that he doesn't include his experiences with his current relationship, "I’m in a relationship, but I want to keep it private. I haven’t written any posts about her."

"I just want a lot of people to relate to or laugh at my posts," he continued.

More than the laughter it gives, these types of content spark conversations and foster deeper connections through shared experiences.

Like a true memer, Niki has this to say for Valentine's Day: "Sana 'wag kayo lokohin ng Valentine's [date] niyo."
