'Don't Look Up' is on its way to becoming Netflix's #1 Christmas film, but falls short in Rotten Tomatoes reviews
If you've been keeping an eye on movie recommendations during the Christmas break, the star-studded apocalypse film Don't Look Up might have caught your eye.
The Adam McKay-helmed film starring big names like Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Ariana Grande, Jonah Hill, Cate Blanchett, Timothée Chalamet, and more is on its way to becoming Netflix's top movie this Christmas, but reviews of the film have been divided.
Based on 210 reviews since its release, the ensemble film has been served a considerably low rating of 55% on review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, marking it as a "Rotten" film based on the site's rating system.
"Don't Look Up aims too high for its scattershot barbs to consistently land, but Adam McKay's star-studded satire hits its target of collective denial square on," the site's critic consensus reads.
On the other hand, Screenrant's Stephen Colbert argued that viewers ought to not be put off by the film's Rotten rating, as the "discrepancy between the Tomatometer and average review scores isn't uncommon, but it's usually exacerbated by polarizing movies."
He added that Rotten Tomatoes' Top Critics tend to be more scrutinizing to films that are considered "Oscar Bait" due to a star-studded cast—especially when you consider that most of Don't Look Up's leads have already won, if not nominated for, an Academy Award.
