Viva Magenta is Pantone's 2023 Color of the Year
Pantone has announced its 2023 color of the year: Viva Magenta.
The New Jersey-based global authority on color on its website said Viva Magenta, or Pantone 18-1750, is a shade rooted in nature descending from the red family "expressive of a new signal of strength." It also "vibrates with vim and vigor."
"Viva Magenta is brave and fearless," Pantone said, adding that it's a "pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative."
The 2023 Color of the Year was inspired by the shade of the insect called cochineal, from which the natural dye is derived.
"In this age of technology, we look to draw inspiration from nature and what is real," said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of Pantone Color Institute. Eiseman added that by invoking the forces of nature, Viva Magenta "galvanizes our spirit, helping us to build our inner strength."
Viva Magenta, Pantone noted, is a new animated red that revels in pure joy, encouraging experimentation, and self-expression without restraint. It's also an electrifying and a boundaryless shade that is manifesting as a stand-out statement.
"Viva Magenta welcomes anyone and everyone with the same verve for life and rebellious spirit," it said. "It is a color that is audacious, full of wit and inclusive of all."
The Color of the Year announcement comes with a new exhibit dubbed Magentaverse, which explores the dynamic between artificial intelligence and human creativity, Pantone said. The exhibit will have Viva Magenta-centered interactive rooms featuring visual, auditory, and tactile experiences.
Pantone reveals its Color of the Year every December.
For 2022, it chose Very Peri, a periwinkle blue hue with a violet-red undertone. The color took inspiration from trends in gaming and the metaverse.
