Meet the iPhone 14 series: New design for Pro versions, better low-light photos, safety functions

Apple introduced its newest smartphone lineup: the iPhone 14 series.

Four models were unveiled at Apple's Far Out event on Sept. 7 (Sept. 8, Philippine time), namely the iPhone 14 (6.1-inch), iPhone 14 Pro (6.1-inch), iPhone 14 Pro Max (6.7-inch), and the new iPhone 14 Plus (6.7-inch).

While the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus come with minimal upgrades—compared to the iPhone 13, the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max boast the more exciting upgrades.

iPhone 14 and 14 Plus

The new iPhone 14 and 14 Plus still sport the notch on its Retina XDR display, but it's smaller than previous iterations. Its screen is also protected by Ceramic Shield like the 13 series.

Powering the new device is an A15 Bionic chipset. While Apple hasn't specified the phone's battery capacity, it says the new iPhone promises "all-day" life.

For cameras, the layout on the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus is similar to the iPhone 13 with the two cameras placed diagonally.

Capturing photos on the iPhone 14 is a 12MP main camera with f1.5 aperture and Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). The tech giant claims that this enables 49% improvement in low light image quality and allows for a faster night mode.

In front, there's a 12MP TrueDepth camera capable of Autofocus and low-light photography for better selfies and group shots.

For shooting videos, stabilization is improved with a feature called Camera Action. This enables the phone to take smoother videos, like you're using a gimbal, even while you're running.

Apple has also equipped the iPhone 14 with an eSIM. There'll no longer be a SIM tray on US models of the phone, but there's no confirmation yet if this will be the same for the Philippine version.

The iPhone 14 comes in four colorways: midnight, starlight, blue, purple, and product RED.

iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max

Apple finally gave users much-awaited features in its Pro devices, giving the phones a new design, always-on display, and improved low-light photography capable cameras.

The tech giant has transitioned from the notch to a pill-shaped cutout for the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, giving users a bigger screen. Activities such as calls, voice recordings, and notifications will show up around the cutout, a feature called "Dynamic Island."

In addition, the new Super Retina XDR Display finally supports always-on display, allowing users to check notifications at a glance without tapping on the screen.

Powered by a new A16 Bionic chip, the Pro versions promise better power efficiency, display, and camera.

The new iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max carry a 48MP main sensor for capturing finer details, 12MP ultra wide lens capable of macro photography, and an improved telephoto lens for capturing pictures in low light. Pro photographers can capture images in ProRAW at 48MP.

For videos, the iPhone 14 also has Action Mode for smoother shots as well as an improved Cinematic Mode, enabling users to shoot 4K at 30fps and 4K at 24fps.

The devices come in colors of space black, silver, gold, and deep purple.

Like the previous iterations, all models support MagSafe charging. Safety features like crash detection and Emergency SOS via Satellite are also supported by the new series.

Prices for the new devices are as follows:

  • iPhone 14 - $799 (~P46,000)
  • iPhone 14 Plus - $899  (~P51,000)
  • iPhone 14 Pro - $999 (~P57,00)
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max - $1,099 (~P63,000)
