LOOK: Sony introduces a lighter, smaller PlayStation 5 model

Gamers, you might want to add this to your Christmas wishlist: a lighter and smaller version of the PlayStation 5.

According to Sony, the new models aim to address the "evolving needs of players," hence, a slimmer version of the latest edition of PlayStation. 

"To address the evolving needs of players, our engineering and design teams collaborated on a new form factor that provides greater choice and flexibility," the Japanese multinational conglomerate corporation said in a statement. 

"The same technology features that make PS5 the best to play are packed into a smaller form factor, along with an attachable Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive and a 1TB SSD for more internal storage," it added. 

Likewise, the new model has been reduced by 30% in volume and weighs only 18 percent and 24 percent compared to the previous models. There is also an option to add an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive PS5 to the PS5 Digital Edition.

There are four separate cover panels, with the top portion in a glossy look, while the bottom remains matte. 

The new PS5 model will be available starting this November in the US at select local retailers and on its website. It will continue to roll out globally in the following months.

The recommended retail price of the new PS5 remains the same as the existing model it replaces. It will cost $499 (P28,306.02) for the version with the disc drive or $449 (around P25,462) for the “digital edition” without disc drive. 

According to Sony, it will still sell the original PS5 model, but once they are out of stock, the new PS5 Slim will be the only model available for purchase.

Sony launched the PlayStation in Japan in December 1994 and to the rest of the world a few months later. Over the years, Sony has released six main PlayStation consoles and two handheld PlayStation consoles.
