'Iti Mapukpukaw' fails to make Oscar 2024 shortlist
Carl Joseph Papa's award-winning film Iti Mapukpukaw has ended its Oscar journey.
The Filipino indie film failed to make the shortlist of the Academy Awards for Best International Feature.
The shortlist, released on Dec. 22, included 15 films that will continue in the second round of voting. The list includes the following titles: 20 Days in Mariupol, Amerikatsi, Fallen Leaves, Four Daughters, Godland, Io Capitano, The Monk and the Gun, The Mother of All Lies, Perfect Days, The Promised Land, Society of the Snow, The Taste of Things, The Teachers' Lounge, Tótem, and The Zone of Interest.
Iti Mapukpukaw was part of the 85 films that qualified in the category for the 2024 Oscars.
Reacting to the results, one of the film's producers, Toñet Jadaone expressed her gratitude for all of their supporters.

Dennis Buckly, a Filipino movie reviewer who's also part of Iti Mapukpukaw's Oscar campaign, also wrote about how "disappointed" he was about the end of the film's Academy Awards hopes.

Despite the outcome, Buckly shared exciting news about the Filipino film's international premiere in Palm Springs and Rotterdam.
The animated film Iti Mapukpukaw, starring Carlo Aquino, Gio Gahol, and Dolly de Leon, was awarded the Best Film at the Cinemalaya Philippines Independent Film Festival 2023, becoming the first full-length animated feature to do so. The film has a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
