Here's what you need to know about Copilot+, Microsoft's new AI-powered computer

Published May 22, 2024 12:52 pm

Microsoft just announced its artificial intelligence (AI)-powered Windows personal computer.

In a blog post, the technology company said Copilot+ PCs are the “fastest, most intelligent Windows PCs ever built.”

“Now, we begin a new chapter with AI innovation on the device,” it said. “We have completely reimagined the entirety of the PC—from silicon to the operating system, the application layer to the cloud—with AI at the center, marking the most significant change to the Windows platform in decades.”

Copilot+ will launch on June 18 starting at $999 (P58,000). Microsoft said it worked with Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, and its very own Surface line, which includes Surface Pro and Surface Laptop.

Here are the features of Copilot+.

All-new system architecture

Microsoft said it will bring together the power of CPU, GPU, and neural processing unit (NPU). It’s connected to and enhanced by large language models in concert with small language models, making it 20 times more powerful and up to 100 times more efficient for running AI workloads.

Its new silicon can do up to over 40 trillion operations per second.

Moreover, the company claimed it outperforms its rival Apple’s latest 15-inch Macbook Air with M3 8-core CPU and 10-core GPU via its PCs with Snapdragon X Elite 12 core and Snapdragon X Plus 10 core configurations.

Longer battery life

Copilot+ PCs are said to deliver up to 22 hours of local video playback and 15 hours of web browsing on a single charge.

Microsoft claimed this is 20% more battery in local video playback compared to MacBook Air 15”.

AI features without internet

Microsoft said Copilot+ PCs have multiple state-of-the-art AI models that can be run locally, directly on the device.

This removes previous limitations on things like latency, cost, and even privacy to boost productivity, creativity, and communications.

Recall things you forget

The Recall feature allows users to access what they previously saw or did à la photographic memory. This would be helpful to remember things they may have forgotten and find them quickly and intuitively using cues.

Microsoft said users may find the content you need in their timeline across any application, website, document, and more. Using screenray snapshots, they may take the next step using suggested actions based on object recognition and, ultimately, get back to where they were.

Copilot+ PCs organize information based on relationships and associations unique to individual experiences, according to Microsoft, and such personal semantic indexes are built and stored entirely in one’s device.

Cocreate for AI-powered image creation and editing

Cocreate lets users combine text prompts and ink strokes to generate new images in nearly real-time for free.

Microsoft said today’s cloud offerings may limit images created through natural language, keep one waiting while the artwork processes, and even present privacy concerns.

But with Cocreate, users may fine-tune photos to their liking without relying solely on image generators.

It uses Copilot+’s NPU and small language models in applications like Paint and Photos.

AI experiences with creative apps

Microsoft has partnered with Adobe, DaVinci Resolve Studio, CapCut, Cephable, LiquidText, and djay Pro to deliver innovative experiences.

AI will be optimized in these apps for the NPU, allowing for faster and smoother workflow.

Live translation of languages

Through Live Captions, users may easily understand foreign languages by turning any audio passing through their PC into a single, English-language caption in real-time on the screen.

Copilot+ can translate into English any live or pre-recorded audio in any app or video platform from over 40 languages.

Copilot

The feature acts as a personal agent that’s accessible through the new Copilot key, putting the most advanced AI models at one’s fingertips.

It gives users the full application experience in a streamlined, simple yet powerful manner, Windows said.

In the coming weeks, they may access the latest models, including OpenAI's GPT-4o, which can understand commands in text, voice, or images.

Quick Settings additions

Quick Settings now includes portrait light, which automatically adjusts the image to improve perceived illumination in a dark environment or brighten the foreground pixels when in a low-light environment.

Three new creative filters (illustrated, animated, or watercolor), meanwhile, provide artistic flare.

An eye contact teleprompter helps one maintain eye contact while reading the screen.

There are also new improvements to voice focus and portrait blur to help ensure focus in one's content.
