'Wednesday' may be moving out of Netflix for season 2
Wednesday became an instant hit on Netflix, beating out Stranger Things as the most-watched show on the platform in a single week, but it looks like the Jenna Ortega-led series may be moving to another home for its second season.
While Netflix has yet to renew the horror-comedy for a second chapter, there are speculations online about the series leaving the platform for another.
As part of the Addams family franchise, Wednesday is under Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer (MGM), which recently closed a merger with Amazon for $8.5 billion, according to Deadline. This could mean that the rights to the Netflix hit may go to Amazon, too, and we might see season two on Prime Video instead.
But Netflix doesn't seem to be done with the series yet. In December, the streaming giant's head of scripted series Peter Friedlander said he was "optimistic" about the show's future.
"I am optimistic about Wednesday. We'll leave it at that. Weirdly because it feels different, but we're just two weeks into the launch of Wednesday. So we're still really at the beginning of this cultural phenomenon and there's a lot to absorb and learn about it," he told Variety.
Nothing's set in stone yet as Netflix could strike a deal with Amazon to keep the Addams family spinoff on its platform. The show became a breakout hit, becoming the third most popular Netflix series of all time in its first 19 days. The top two spots go to Squid Game and Stranger Things.
Additionally, Amazon stated that it does not plan to make MGM content exclusive to Prime Video.
For its second season, Wednesday has been teased by showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar to explore the titular Addams daughter's relationships with eventual best friend Enid (Emma Myers) and her mother Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones).
