Disney shuffles release date calendar for Marvel movies
In a major calendar shake-up, Disney has officially delayed the theatrical releases of several upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe films.
The shift in the schedule, reportedly due to production concerns and not box office numbers, will push back the release date of films slated for 2022 and 2023, causing a snowball effect on Disney Plus releases.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, originally planned for March 2022, has now been moved to May 6, 2022.
It takes the spot originally intended for Thor: Love and Thunder, which will now be released on July 8, 2022, which bumps down Black Panther: Wakanda Forever to Nov. 11, 2022.
The Captain Marvel sequel The Marvels, has been pushed back another year, and is now scheduled for a Feb. 17, 2023 release.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has also been delayed further and is now planned for July 28, 2023.
The MCU has two more movies planned this year, namely Eternals, which is premiering on Nov. 5 and Sony's Spider-Man: No Way Home, arriving on Dec. 17.
The only unaffected MCU movie beyond the two scheduled for the year is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which remains fixed in its release date of May 5, 2023.
Additionally, two untitled Marvel movies originally scheduled for July 28 and Oct. 6, 2023 have been pulled from the calendar, while one has been rescheduled to Nov. 3, 2023.
Aside from the two untitled Marvel films, a live-action Disney movie and a 20th Century film have been removed from the 2023 schedule.
The next Indiana Jones movie has been delayed by 11 months. Fans will have to wait until June 30, 2023 for Harrison Ford's fifth stint as the iconic archeologist.
It’s worth noting that some MCU shows on Disney Plus, such as Loki and Hawkeye, are linked to the MCU films, which could affect future releases on the streamer as well. The Hawkeye series on Disney Plus is scheduled to debut on Nov. 24, 2021, while Loki has been renewed for a second season.
