'The Picture of Dorian Gray’ TV adaptation is in the works at Netflix
Oscar Wilde’s classic horror-fantasy novel The Picture of Dorian Gray is getting a TV series to be released soon on Netflix.
Dubbed The Grays, the series will give its modern take on Wilde's gothic fiction and will be about the "fascination with eternal youth set against the backdrop of the modern beauty industry." It will follow the story of siblings Basil and Dorian Gray, Deadline reported.
The upcoming series will be written by Katie Rose Rogers, who will also co-produce it with her sibling, Robbie Rogers. Joining the production team are Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman, Rina Mimoun, who will be the showrunner, and Lee Toland Krieger, the director.
In Wilde’s 1891 novel, Dorian was portrayed as a cultured and wealthy person who sold his soul for eternal youth and beauty. His moral corruption is reflected in his portrait painted by his artist friend Basil Hallward, who will be killed along with others as Dorian goes down with his “self-indulgent sensualism and hedonism.”
The novel has since spawned multiple feature and TV adaptations, including the 2009 Dorian Gray film that starred Ben Barnes from Shadow and Bone.
