Three more ‘Game of Thrones’ spin-offs reportedly in development
Three more spin-offs set in the expansive world of Game of Thrones are reportedly in development at HBO.
The new concepts come after three previously announced prequels in various stages of development, including House of the Dragon which is slated for a 2022 release, Tales of Dunk and Egg based on George R.R. Martin's novellas, and a possible animated series.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, two of the three additional spinoff projects have working titles of 9 Voyages and 10,000 Ships, while the third is set in the slums of Flea Bottom.
9 Voyages comes from English screenwriter Bruno Heller, who created the historic drama series Rome for the network. The new story will focus on Lord Corlys Velaryon or The Sea Snake, who was the head of House Velaryon, and one of the players in the famous Dance of the Dragons event. Actor Steve Toussaint plays the role in the upcoming House of the Dragon, which could mean possible crossovers and an expanded “GOT-verse.”
The second project, with the working title 10,000 Ships, revolves around the warrior queen Princess Nymeria, a revered ancestor of House Martell who founded the kingdom of Dorne. Two characters bear the name of the legendary heroine in the original series—Sand Snake Nymeria Sand and Arya's direwolf. Her story is set roughly 1,000 years before the events in Game of Thrones, making it much older on the Westeros timeline than any of the other previously announced projects in the works.
The third spin-off series is set in Flea Bottom, the poorest slum district of King's Landing, the capital of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, where characters like Davos Seaworth and Gendry Baratheon were born.
At this point, only House of the Dragon has officially been greenlit of the six concepts. The live-action prequel series focuses on the Targaryens who lived generations before Daenerys. Meanwhile, Tales of Dunk and Egg, is a live-action series adaptation based on fantasy novellas by George R.R. Martin which follow the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and a young Aegon V Targaryen (Egg), 90 years prior to the events of A Song of Ice and Fire.
An animated series was also previously reported to be in the very early development stages at HBO Max “as part of a larger strategy to expand the world of creator George R.R. Martin's fantasy drama.”
It’s been two years since Game of Thrones ended its landmark eight-season run on HBO, leaving a void that the network seems desperate to fill based on the number of spin-off projects in the works.
