‘We are truly disappointed’: Gucci family airs concern about upcoming murder film ‘House of Gucci’
The Gucci heirs are not happy about how the men in their family are depicted in the upcoming murder film House of Gucci. They are also afraid of the inaccuracies in the film due to lack of communication.
In an interview with the Associated Press, the great-grandchildren of Guccio Gucci, founder of the luxury fashion house, said that the filmmakers never consulted with them about the story nor did they reply to the family when they reached out.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Patrizia Gucci, one of Gucci’s granddaughters, said that the family is “truly disappointed.”
"They are stealing the identity of a family to make a profit, to increase the income of the Hollywood system... Our family has an identity, privacy. We can talk about everything, but there is a borderline that cannot be crossed,” she said.
House of Gucci is based on the 2001 book of the same title which is about the orchestrated murder of Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver), grandson of Gucci, and the trial and conviction of his ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani (Lady Gaga) in 1995.
They also believe that the actors and costume design feel inauthentic, as seen on the paparazzi photos on the set.
“My grandfather was a very handsome man, like all the Guccis, and very tall, blue eyes and very elegant. He is being played by Al Pacino, who is not very tall already, and this photo shows him as fat, short, with sideburns, really ugly. Shameful, because he doesn’t resemble him at all,” Patrizia Gucci said referring to his grandfather Aldo Gucci.
Jared Leto, on the other hand, plays her father Paolo Gucci and is shown sporting an unkempt hair and a lilac corduroy suit. “Horrible, horrible. I still feel offended,” she said.
When Patrizia tried to reach out to the director’s wife, Gianna Facio, she never got a reply. She said her family will decide later on what action they might take.
The House of Gucci production is in cooperation with the Gucci fashion house, which the Gucci family has not owned since 1993 when Maurizio sold his share to Bahrain-based Investcorp. Its current president and chief executive officer Marco Bizzarri recently told WWD that the label is allowing “total creative freedom” to the production, giving access to its wardrobe archives.
“Gucci is collaborating with MGM and Scott Free Productions by providing access to the house’s historical archive for wardrobe and props,” Bizzarri said.
