Netflix aims to spill new 'secrets' and stop the 'lies' in Britney Spears documentary
The rumors are true: Netflix is coming out with a documentary about Britney Spears.
The streaming platform released the first trailer of Britney vs Spears, in which director Erin Lee Carr (Mommy Dead and Dearest and I Love You, Now Die: The Commonwealth Vs. Michelle Carter) and journalist Jenny Eliscu "delve deep into the tangled history of the conservatorship" while speaking to former employees, attorneys, and more.
Unlike previous documentaries where it included traumatizing images of the pop star, this one will not.
"I specifically made the creative decision that we were not going to utilise the same imagery that she has said before is traumatising," Carr told the Los Angeles Times. "The incidents that happened in 2007 during one of the episodes at the hospital — you're never going to see those."
Instead, this documentary will feature "years-long investigative work, exclusive interviews and new documents," including leaked text messages, a voicemail, and a "confidential" report sent by someone close to the conservatorship.
"Hi my name is Britney Spears, I called you earlier. I'm calling again because I just wanted to make sure that during the process of eliminating the conservatorship…" Spears said in a voicemail that was sent to a lawyer in the beginning of the conservatorship in 2009.
Parts of her first public testimony on the conservatorship—which was last June 23—were also included in the trailer.
"I just want my life back," Spears could be heard in the intro.
"I have worked my whole life," she said. "I don't owe these people anything."
The upcoming Netflix documentary will be released on Tuesday, Sept. 28, a day ahead of Britney’s next court hearing. This hearing could determine whether the performer’s father, Jamie Spears, will be removed as her legal guardian.
