George R.R. Martin teases 'Game of Thrones' animated spinoffs in the works
George R.R. Martin, who wrote the Game of Thrones books, announced in a blog post that he has multiple animated projects set in the world of A Song of Ice and Fire in the works.
The fantasy series author penned a blog post about the spinoffs on New Year's Eve as he gushed over Netflix's animated show Blue Eye Samurai and the state of television.
"Blue Eye Samurai is very much its own thing, and it is magnificent," he wrote. "Even if you don't normally watch animation, give it a try. It's terrific. If you like my own stuff, I think you'll love it."
Martin continued to talk about his own animation projects he's working on with HBO. While none of them have been greenlit yet, the father of Westeros said they're close to "taking the next step" with a couple of them.
One of the series moving forward is about the Sea Snake, Corlys Velaryon, who fans have seen in the HBO series House of the Dragon. Titled Nine Voyages, the animation will explore the legendary voyages of the Lord of the Tides who earned his riches by traveling to different regions in Westeros and Essos—something that would've been expensive to shoot in live-action.
"Budgetary constraints would likely have made a live-action version prohibitively expensive, what with half the show taking place at sea, and the necessity of creating a different port every week, from Driftmark to Lys to the Basilisk Isles to Volantis to Qart to... well, on and on and on," Martin wrote.
"There's a whole world out there. And we have a lot better chance of showing it all with animation. So we now have three animated projects underway."
Martin ended his blog by saying that while they have these shows in the works, it's uncertain if they'll ever make it to air.
Other Game of Thrones spinoffs have made the rounds in the past year including one about a prequel of Aegon the Conqueror and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight.
The other Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, is set to premiere its second season in 2024.
