Brace yourselves, spice lovers: Major chili supply issue causes sriracha shortage

First fries, then Randy's donuts and Mary Grace's ensaymadas, and now sriracha? Popular sriracha maker Huy Fong Foods announced that it has suspended sales and production of its famous sauce due to a "severe shortage of chili."

The California-based company confirmed on June 8 that the shortage has affected the production of Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce, Chili Garlic, and Sambal Oelek.

An email sent to customers in April recently made the rounds online, which states the chili pepper shortage started as early as July 2020.

"Unfortunately, this is out of our control and without this essential ingredient we are unable to produce any of our products," it said.

Aside from chili peppers, a number of food and products have been in shortage globally this year including wheat, sugar, potato, and baby formula.
