Wheelchair racer Jerrold Mangliwan advances to finals, para archer Agustina Bantiloc ends run
Two Filipino Paralympic players made the country proud with their performance in their respective games.
Wheelchair racer Jerrold Mangliwan managed to earn a spot in the finals of the men's 400m-T52 after finishing in seventh place during Heat 1.
The 44-year-old athlete clocked in a time of 1:05.79, which was enough for him to qualify for the top eight who will advance to the finals. Mangliwan emerged as one of the two next fastest alongside Canada’s Anthony Bouchard, who had a time of 1:05.98.
Only the top three finishers in each heat alongside the next two fastest will qualify in the medal rounds.
Meanwhile, para archer Agustina Bantiloc ended her Paralympics journey when she fell short of winning in the 1/16 elimination round of the women's individual compound open event.
Bantiloc suffered a 143-127 loss to Brazil’s Jane Karla Gogel, who had a 58-53 lead. The Brazilian further advanced when she got two 10s in the third end to get 87, while Bantiloc only had 77.
The match ended in a 116-104 advantage.
Bantiloc previously scored 618 points in the women's individual compound open ranking round out of 720, placing her last among the 28 competitors.
Nevertheless, she achieved history by being the first Filipino para archer to compete in the Paralympics.
Apart from Mangliwan, four more athletes can still win the Philippines the coveted gold—track and field athlete Cendy Asusano, taekwondo jin Alain Ganapin, and swimmers Ernie Gawilan and Angel Otom.
