Which Facebook users can apply to get share of social media site's P40.85 billion settlement?
Facebook users based in the United States who had accounts at any time since May 24, 2007, can apply to receive their portion of a $725-million (P40.85 billion) privacy settlement.
Facebook's parent company Meta agreed to pay this amount to settle a lawsuit, which alleged that the world's largest social media platform allowed Cambridge Analytica to use the personal data of millions of users.
To recall, the said firm supported the 2016 election campaign of former US President Donald Trump.
It remains unclear how much money each individual user will receive. This is because the figure will decrease with each additional valid claim since the money will be divided among the total qualified submissions, among other factors.
"The answer depends on how many Settlement Class Members submit valid claims and how long you were a user on Facebook during the Class Period," Facebook answered the frequently asked question.
You may fill out and submit the claim form here until the deadline on Aug. 25.
As for when the payment will be received, Facebook said there will first be a final approval hearing regarding the case's settlement on Sept. 7. This will consider whether to approve the settlement, any objections to the settlement or any of its terms, requests for awards to the settlement class representatives, and the request for an award of attorneys' fees and costs to class counsel for their work.
"If the Court approves the Settlement, there may be appeals. It is always uncertain whether appeals will be filed and, if so, how long it will take to resolve them. Settlement payments will be distributed as soon as possible if the Court grants Final Approval of the Settlement and after any appeals are resolved," Facebook clarified.
