India woman who underwent uterus removal gets kidneys stolen

An Indian woman went to a private clinic to have her uterus removed. Later on, she found that her kidneys were stolen.

According to the India Times, Sunita Devi, 38, underwent hysterectomy at the Subhakant Clinic in Bariyarpur village in Muzaffarpur district last Sept. 3. However, after the surgery Devi's condition worsened as she continued suffering stomach pains. She was brought to the state-run Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) on Sept. 7.

Much to everybody's shock, doctors found that her kidneys were removed. She's been undergoing dialysis at the SKMCH since then, pending her kidney transplant.

“Since Sunita has no kidneys, if she does not have dialysis for even one day, then she could die,” SKMCH superintendent Dr. BS Jha told the India Times.

A mother of three, Devi is a scheduled caste, or among those who heavily depend on government support.

Devi's family filed a complaint against the clinic owner Pawan Kumar and the surgeon, Dr. RK Singh.

According to the police's initial investigation, Subhakant Clinic wasn't registered and Singh's educational qualification also appears to be fake.

The clinic also has no operation theatre and lacked even basic facilities, the Hindustan Times reported.

The police has already arrested Kumar, while Singh is still at large.

Early this November, the National Human Rights Commission called on the Indian government to take action, the Hindustan Times reported.

According to the India Times, Devi was asked to enroll at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Science for an organ transplant, which will be done as soon as there are kidneys available.

But Devi demanded that Singh should be arrested "immediately," and that his kidneys be given to her.

"I appeal to the government to immediately arrest the accused doctor who removed my both kidneys," she said. "His kidneys should be given to me for transplant so that I could survive."
