Grandma who died of cancer gives Ouija boards to funeral guests: 'Let's keep in touch'

A grandmother who succumbed to cancer made sure her funeral guests still smiled despite her death by giving them homemade Ouija boards so they could "keep in touch."

In a report by Today, 81-year-old grandmother Jodie Perryman passed away on Oct. 12 after a hard-fought battle with cancer. After her health began to decline quickly over the summer, Jodie prepared for the worst in an unexpected way: making handmade Ouija boards for her funeral guests.

On Twitter, her 20-year-old granddaughter Gracie shared a snap of the Ouija board, which contained a photo of Jodie sticking her tongue out and putting her middle fingers up in the air. It had a little note beside it that read, "Let's keep in touch!"

"Received this at my grandmother's funeral. What an icon," Gracie wrote in her post, which has now accumulated over 700,000 likes and 80,000 retweets.

The Austin-based college student told the news outlet that the keepsake gave her a shock when she first opened it and recalled asking "What on Earth is this?"

While funerals are commonly solemn and somber to respect the deceased, Gracie said that Jodie's funeral erupted in laughter as the room of about 30 to 40 people began opening their gifts.

"It was hysterical. And everybody was like, of course, that's so Jodie of her," she said.

Even before she died, Jodie had already made a promise on Facebook in August that she will gift her funeral guests with their very own Ouija board. Despite this, Gracie didn't think that she would actually push through it.

According to her, Jodie had always been the life of the party with her jokes. She described her late grandma as a "firecracker" who could "outwit anybody."

"She was hilarious. She had a great sense of humor and a huge heart. She loved her family. And she just took care of people around her. She was a great woman," Gracie said.

However, when she and her roommates tried to see if the Ouija board would let them speak to her dead grandmother, it didn't work.

"It's just paper," she said while laughing. "We tried but to no avail."
