Woman run over by own car after trying to save pet inside

A woman in Wales was left seriously injured after being run over by her own car as she tried to save her pet dog inside.

According to multiple media outlets, the incident took place when the handbrake of Mary Andrews' Audi A3 malfunctioned and began rolling down the steep seaside hill in Borth where it was parked. 

"I stopped on the hill to get a book but when I looked behind the car was moving," she told Daily Mail, adding that she was set to return from a day trip when it happened.

The 56-year-old said she tried to stop the rolling vehicle and jumped into it to keep her Dachshund dog safe from the accident. She, however, ended up getting run over and almost getting killed by her own car.

"It was instinct. I just thought the car would kill people and I would lose Elvis—he was just sitting there. So I just panicked and went in front of the car to stop it rolling down the hill and it went over me," she shared. 

The injured woman was rushed to the hospital after being trapped for 20 minutes under her wheels. Mary was left with serious injuries, including dislocated hip and knee, four broken ribs, and a spine fracture in the agony. 

She thanked concerned individuals, including an off-duty doctor, who came to help her after the accident.

"It all happened so quickly so I didn't get any names. I'm so grateful for everybody who helped me get out from under the car."

The woman is still on crutches and is currently confined at Royal Stoke University Hospital for treatment.
