After Congress proclaims the winners, here's how a president-elect transitions into power
Here's what to expect as the country transitions to the incoming Marcos administration in the coming weeks.
With his commanding lead in the 2022 national elections, presumptive-president Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. is all set to be the country's next chief executive.
After the Commission on Elections, sitting as the National Board of Canvassers, formally proclaim the winners, the winning candidate will be referred to as "president-elect" until after the inauguration.
There will be four groups in charge of the transition: the Transition Team, the Inaugural Committee, the Search Committee, and the Policy Team.
The transition team formed by the president-elect will be in charge of ensuring the smooth transition from the old administration to the new. This includes the needed paperwork (government records, equipment, data), and coordination. Vic Rodriguez, the spokesman of Marcos Jr., has stated in media interviews that the campaign team's executive committee will also likely be part of the transition team.
Also formed by the president-elect, the inaugural committee will "coordinate the ceremonial, invitations, and other details for the inaugural," or the beginning of the new administration.
The search committee and policy team will also then vet the appointments and policy goals of the new president, and ensure that it's in line with the ongoing projects and pending posts of the outgoing administration.
Prior to the elections, President Duterte also established a Palace transition team.
When will the inauguration take place?
Duterte took 34 days to transition—between winning the official tally on May 27, 2016, to his inauguration on June 30, 2016.
During the inauguration, the president-elect will be met by the former president in Malacañang. From there, they will walk the palace's halls as a courtesy call, until the former president will be escorted outside by his successor.
After the former president is given his military honor, the inauguration ceremony will begin. An oath-taking will occur where the president will be sworn in. Members of the president's family are present during the procession.
After a 21-gun salute, the new president will deliver his first address to the people. He is then expected to hold his first Cabinet meeting to begin his presidency.
Will the president-elect automatically live in the Malacañang?
The choice of residence is up to the discretion of the president. Though the Gazette says that the president-elect living in the Malacañan Palace "leads to greater transparency while ensuring safety," they still have a choice to live in another residence near Malacañang.
For his presidency, Duterte decided to live in Malacañan Palace's Bahay Pangarap, a separate residence near Malacañang Park within the Presidential Security Group. The originally single-bedroom house was expanded to four bedrooms to accommodate the Duterte family.
The late Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III also resided in Bahay Pangarap.
If the incoming president-elect decides to live in the main Malacañang Palace building, they will live within the sprawling complex with over 10 main halls.
