NCCA launches free-to-download 'Philippines History Source Book' to aid remote learning

The National Commission on Culture and Arts (NCCA) through the National Committee on Historical Research (NCHR) has launched the Philippine History Source Book, an extensive e-book about Philippine history through primary sources and annotations.

Serving as "NCCA-NCHR’s response to the remote learning modality in the time of the Pandemic," the 651-page compilation features a myriad of excerpts and studies on important historical events starting from pre-16th century Philippines up to the present COVID-19 pandemic.

Per NCHR Head Emmanuel Calairo in the book's foreword, the project was also initiated to set the standard on what historical readings ought to be prioritized in the education sector.

"I am very confident that through this project, Philippine history will be learned effectively even if teachers and students are in the comfort of their homes," Calairo wrote.

The book is divided into 11 chapters per historical period: Spanish period, 16th-18th century, 19th century, 1896 Philippine Revolution; Philippine-American War; American period; Commonwealth; World War II, Post-War, 1972-1986, and 1986-present.

The NCCA collaborated with the history departments of the Ateneo de Manila University, De La Salle University, Silliman University, and the University of the Philippines Diliman for the project.
