Stray cat rescued by man from animal shelter saves his life from would-be robbery
A man from Mississippi saved a stray cat from an animal shelter four years ago. Now, the beloved feline returned the favor when robbers attempted to break into their home.
Last July 25, the 9.1-kilo tricolor cat named Bandit may have just saved the life of retired surgeon Fred Everitt, 68, who was sleeping soundly at the dead of night.
Local outlet Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal on July 30 reported that Bandit did everything she could to alert Everitt about the imminent threat. Around 2:30AM to 3:00AM, she let out loud guttural meows in the kitchen.
Everitt didn't mind it at first, thinking she just simply saw another cat.
Bandit then rushed to his bedroom, jumped onto the bed, pulled his comforter, and clawed at his arms, Everitt realized something was wrong.
"She had never done that before," he told Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal. "I went, 'What in the world is wrong with you?'"
Everitt then went to the kitchen and saw two young men outside his backdoor. One had a handgun and the other using a crowbar to pry his door open, he recalled.
He went back to his room to retrieve his gun, but by the time he went back, the supposed thieves already left.
Everitt said the situation "could've been very different," if it weren't for his beloved Bandit.
"You hear of guard dogs," he said. "This is a guard cat.”
Since adopting the "all over the place" Bandit from the Tupelo-Lee Humane Society in 2018, little did Everitt know that she'd become not only a loving pet but also a hero.
"I want to let people know that you not only save a life when you adopt a pet or rescue one," he noted. "The tides could be turned. You never know when you save an animal if they're going to save you."
