Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. proclaimed as president-elect, Sara Duterte-Carpio as vice president-elect
Ferdinand "Bongbong" Romualdez Marcos Jr. and his running mate Sara Zimmerman Duterte-Carpio have been proclaimed as the Philippines' next president-elect and vice president-elect.
The Congress sitting as the National Board of Canvassers (NBOC) made the announcement after completing the final tally of votes coming from 173 certificates of canvass (COC) from around the country.
Under the campaign message of "Unity," Marcos Jr. and Duterte-Carpio led the 2022 national elections with over 30 million votes each, far outnumbering their fellow candidates.
Marcos Jr. received 31,629,783 votes or 58.77% of the total. Duterte-Carpio, on the other hand, got 32,208,417 or 61.33% of the total according to the Congress' final tally.
Their closest leading opponents, Vice President Leni Robredo and Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan, trailed behind with over 15 million and 9 million votes, respectively.
The 2022 Congressional canvassing serves as the fastest vote canvassing in the country’s election history.
The Uniteam tandem arrived at the Batasang Pambansa along with their families shortly after the NBOC suspended the tally. Marcos Jr. was accompanied by his mother, former First Lady Imelda Marcos.
According to the president-elect's sister, Senator Imee Marcos, Imelda felt energized by her son's expected proclamation.
"Nanay ko sobrang excited niya at tuwang tuwa siya sa mga pangyayari. Suddenly she is able to hear, to walk. Lahat ng sakit, lahat ng nararamdaman nawala, maliksing maliksi."
In a statement after the official vote tally, Imee also thanked voters for giving their family a "second chance" after the events of People Power I and the Marcos regime.
“We are very grateful for a second chance as it were dahil medyo mabigat ang pinagdaanan ng aming pamilya matapos ang 1986, kung anu-anong kaso ang hinarap namin,” Imee said.
"Nagpapasalamat ako sa lahat ng mga nagtiwala sa amin... Lahat ng naniniwala sa kinakailangan ng ating bansa ay talagang matibay na pumumuno."
During the proclamation, Senate Majority Leader Migz Zubiri lauded presidential candidate Leni Robredo for holding no objections to the canvassing, citing it as a moment of "healing" amid the "emotionally-charged" election campaign.
The camp of candidate Francisco "Isko" Moreno Domagoso and VP candidate Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan also made no objections to the proceedings that began on May 24.
The camp of Marcos Jr. claimed victory on May 12, three days after election day, following the Commission on Elections' partial and unofficial tally showing the former senator leading the pack with over 31.1 million votes.
“To the world, he says: Judge me not by my ancestors, but by my actions,” Marcos Jr. spokesperson and incoming Executive Secretary Vic Rodriguez said.
With his landslide win, Marcos Jr. serves as the country's first majority president win in over 30 years and vows to be "a President for all Filipinos."
