PH snack company marks 60th year with reinforced commitment to sustainability

Published Aug 01, 2023 9:15 am

With the threat of climate change, which is now affecting not just the weather but also people around the world, more and more companies are taking steps to make it a point that what they are offering to the market does not cost the earth.

Mondelez Philippines, for one, celebrated its 60th anniversary in the country by launching initiatives towards a sustainable future for all.

Living up to its tagline “snacking made right,” the snacks company marked another milestone with recycling and waste management at the forefront of its sustainability program in support of the Extended Producer Responsibility Law, which orders firms to take part in proper systems of waste disposal. This marked its continued promise of “offering the right snack, for the right moment, made the right way.”

The Mondelez Philippines team opens its plastic recycling facility.

Mondelez Philippines established a plastic recycling facility that makes use of technology to convert plastic waste into construction materials with the help of Green Antz, a circular economy and innovation group. The initiative collects plastic from Parañaque City, and then shreds and mixes them into cement that will be used for its construction projects across the area. Aside from helping eliminate the amount of plastic that ends up in landfills and waterways, it also provides opportunities for income-generating activities to community members who are making eco-bricks.

To raise awareness of the importance of segregation to the little ones and their families, the snacks brand launched an episode of the Miming and Friends YouTube series—an information and education program that also backs the EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) law. With waste management knowledge from Save Philippine Seas, the show’s latest installment features the process of recycling “to help kids understand how they can make an impact, and families to know how else their plastic waste can be recycled in their communities.”

Reasserting its sustainability commitment is Mondelez Philippines’ special partnership with Plastic Credit Exchange, which aims “to recover and divert the equivalent of 100% of its plastic packaging footprint” used for its food offerings that have been sold in 2023. Last year, the food company ended up gathering 243,000 kilos of plastic waste, around the same weight as two blue whales.

Established in 1963, Mondelez Philippines is the snacks company behind much-loved food brands like Oreo, Tang, Toblerone, Cadbury Dairy Milk, Eden Cheese, and Cheez Whiz. For 60 years and counting, it has stayed true to making snacking right for consumers by growing the firm with a positive and long-term impact on people and the environment in mind. Its focus areas include reducing its carbon footprint using less—but better—packaging and proper waste collection systems.
