Filipinas earns its first-ever FIFA World Cup win
History has been made!
The Philippines secured its first win during the FIFA Women’s World Cup match at the Sky Stadium in Wellington on Tuesday, July 25.
Striker Sarina Bolden made the country's historic first goal in the 24th minute, allowing them to against co-host New Zealand with a 1-0 score.
Speaking to DW during an event in Auckland, Bolden said that the team's shared heritage motivates them to perform best for the Philippines.
"It doesn't really matter where we were born because we've all had this one thing connecting us, and that's being Filipino," the California-born athlete said. "So in the locker room, we're able to connect, get the morale up, no matter what."
Filipinas coach Alen Stajcic agreed saying that it all boils down to their love for their country.
"Ultimately they all have Filipino blood, they all love their country, they all love their heritage, they all love their culture, so getting the bond is actually not difficult."
The Philippines will face Norway next on July 30 in Auckland. If they win, they will advance to the knockout rounds.
