The human remains of a mother was discovered by cleaners a man hired to tidy up his home—10 years after her disappearance.

South China Morning Post reported that the dead body was found in the house of someone living in Japan's Kyoto prefecture when a cleaning company helped him organize his four-bedroom unit. He lived alone in that place since his mom went missing a decade ago and his dad passed away years later.

Eight workers were tasked to complete the job for seven hours, but had to stop at their third hour of cleaning after seeing what appeared to be human bones when they lifted old blankets and bedding.

They told the homeowner about their shocking discovery as soon as possible. The man sought help from authorities, who later confirmed that the dead body was his mother who disappeared 10 years earlier. The cause of her death is still unspecified as of writing.

According to the SCMP, the mother was suspected to have died peacefully in her sleep and was left unnoticed since she did not talk much to anyone when she was still alive. Nobody smelled any bad odors in the place either because it was filled with garbage before it was cleaned.

Giving her reaction to what happened, Kouki Nishioka, the owner of the cleaning company, said: “Initially, the workers were shocked upon discovering the bones, but they managed to adapt more quickly than normal people."

Nishioka added that it's because they "receive at least 10 orders a month to clean up after 'lonely deaths.'"
