US travelers will need a visa to Europe starting 2024
Travelers from the United States will need a visa when visiting Europe starting 2024.
Condé Nast Traveler reported that the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is looking to tighten border security, as well as digitally screen and track travelers entering and leaving European Union countries.
The new visa requirement isn't a traditional one. American travelers, regardless of age, must accomplish an online form providing details about their basic biographical information, travel plans, and travel history, as well as other security questions.
Approval will take place from one hour to 96 hours depending on background. Once done, it will be valid for multiple entries for three years or until the passport's expiry.
They also have to pay an application fee of €7 (P430).
US passport holders may still spend up to 90 days within a 180-day period in Europe as tourists, while a special visa is required for a visit longer than 90 days, according to Condé Nast Traveler.
To date, American travelers have visa-free access to 184 destinations according to the Henley Passport Index, making it the eighth most powerful passport in the world.
